Winter Trends of 2010!

If you're like me, you're in the middle lane of this interstate we call fashion: I'm not in the fast lane, but I'm not grandma back there either. I'm just going the normal speed limit and happy to say that much. So it's no surprise that I am a little late on this entry of upcoming trends for the winter season.

Yes, I said the "T" word. Now go ahead and accuse me of being some kind of impressionable teeny-bopper, and proceed with the "if your friends jumped off a cliff would you jump off to" rhetorical interrogations. The thing is that trends get a bad rap. People seem to be under the impression that if you sport a trend, then you're a slave to fashion and stupid enough to buy and wear things you don't even like. Who seriously does that?

Unless you're Lady Gaga, you have followed a trend. Willingly or unwillingly. In style or out. Don't resist them--you may end up like her.

Trends are fashion in seasons, therefore the person who scoffs at trends scoffs at fashion and is often the girl who wears fake tattoo jewelry coupled with a baggy sweater and still walks down the street feeling as fashion-forward as Stacy London. If you're that person, there's nothing wrong with that. But I just can't help but feel you're missing out! I myself don't actually "follow" trends in the sense that I don't buy something simply because I'm seeing it. For me fashion is a buffet and it always will be, however I enjoy keeping tabs on the latest things. Trends offer change and inspiration. So no scoffing at my friend the trend.

Without further adieu, the upcoming trends of the season as I observe them.

Thick, bulky knits and wraparound scarves with buttons seem to be becoming popular.

I don't really see the wraparound scarf being huge, but you never know. Personally, I have my eye on a twirly scarf. Look familiar? They were popular last year!

And it isn't my style... but this one is adorable.

Next we have--you guessed it--boots.
Different kinds of boots have been coming and going as trends since my dork days in high school. And there are oh so many different kinds! Without a doubt, it is knee-highs and thigh-highs this season. If you like this look, please respect of the fine line between "fashionista" and "hooker"...

Hayden Panettiere paid $350 at Juicy Couture to look like a hooker.

This one isn't for everyone--you have to have the right shape and size of legs to pull them off, otherwise you risk looking funny, or worse--irritating your legs. Fortunately many come in elastic with zippers or strings, which is what you'll want to look for if you're considering a pair. And if you are--PLEASE avoid high heels, you WILL look like a hooker. The downside to this trend (other than possibly looking like Madonna): the pricetag. You'll be lucky to find a semi-decent pair of knee-highs for under $70 in shoe stores (and could easily pay over $200!). After all, 14-24" in height per boot is a lot of material!

Personally I'm liking this trend. I fell in love with the slouchiness and the thought of keeping warm and still being able to wear dresses in the winter without having to utilize the overdone legging. After a lot of shop-and-compare, I found these online for a steal of $32 including shipping.

Also I think you'll see a lot of leather this winter, such as the leather puffer below, along with generally dark shades of clothing. (I'll take neither, thank you!)

Leave this one to Santa 'cause it's $875.

Belted peacoats are my preferred alternative this year! You can pick one up at Forever21.

What do you think? Do you shy away from trends, or just go with the flow? Was there something I missed? And was this interesting enough for me to attempt a similar entry in the spring, or were you bored with inaccuracy?! Let me know!
